In general, the teaching is designed according to the
British model. It is compulsory and free for children
between the ages of 5 and 16 in government-funded schools.
In total there are about 150 elementary schools and several

The University of the West Indies has a branch in Nassau,
where it is mainly focused on education in hotel
administration and tourism. A college with a special focus
on tourism was started in 1992. At the College of the
Bahamas there are other vocational programs, including to
technicians and teachers. Education's share of the state
budget is about 10% (2009).
