Schooling is compulsory and free for children between 5 and 14 years. The role model is the United States school organization. Most children go through compulsory school. Of the adult population, almost 30% (1997) are non-literate. In addition to state schools, there are also church and private. Belize lacks a university, but since 1980 there is a college of arts, science and technology.

In December 2015, Belize banned drilling within 1 km of its coral reef to protect the reef from destruction. However, the destruction of the reef has already progressed as a result of uncontrolled tourism and fishing. However, the worst problem is global warming, which alone has destroyed 40% of the reef since 1998.
