Bhutan Study and Training


Until 1960, the monastic schools were the only educational institutions in Bhutan. After this year a number of primary schools have been built, but in 1989 only about 20% of the children attended school. The education is free of charge, but compulsory schooling is not available. About 40% of the adult population is estimated to be literate and literate (women 28%). In recent years, some upper secondary schools have been added, as have some higher schools for engineers, teachers, economists and healthcare professionals.
