It is a 12-year compulsory school in Brunei. Most kids go
to school.
Over 30% of the schools in the country are private
schools. The country's national language Malay is the
language of instruction for everyone in the first school
years. English is increasingly used upwards in school. In
addition to the formal school system, there are Islamic
religious institutes, where a large number of students

Brunei has one university, founded in 1985.
Illiteracy is estimated to be approx. 9% (2000).
