Training
About 59% of the population (70% of men and 48% of women)
in Eritrea are literate. The education is organized in a
five-year elementary school, a two-year high school and a
four-year high school. The first seven school years are
officially mandatory, but the cost of uniforms, schoolbooks,
etc. means that many cannot afford to let the children go to
school. In 2006, only about 47% of children (43% of girls
and 50% of boys) started elementary school, and about 43%
completed it. As a result of the war, there is a shortage of
schoolhouses, teachers and teaching materials. Basic tuition
in each home language is provided as well as tuition in the
two national languages Tigrinya and Arabic. From high
school English is the most important language of
instruction, and in high school as well as at the
university, all education takes place in English. See TOPSCHOOLSINTHEUSA for TOEFL, ACT, SAT testing locations and high school codes in Eritrea.

Higher education is conducted at the University of
Asmera, which offers medical studies and some further
education, as well as at a technical college and various
vocational colleges. In 2006, 2.4% of GDP was used for
education.
