There is a compulsory school for 9 years for children between 6 and 15 years. Each coral island has its own elementary school, and 92% of children attend school. Tarawa, atoll with about 30 islands among the Gilbert Islands, Kiribati; 31 km2, 50 200 residents (2012). Tarawa is also the term in the urban area, consisting of the districts of Bairiki, Betio and Bonriki, which constitutes the capital of Kiribati. Most of the capital functions are in Bairiki, while Betio has a port and Bonriki airport.
