There are three different school forms in the Maldives:
Koranic schools, Divehis schools and English-speaking
schools. The latter also have a secondary level, while the
former have less than five years of study. A very large
proportion of children participate in lower-level education,
but even though the number of secondary school pupils has
grown sharply during the 1990s, it is still a minority who
receive some education in addition.
During the 1980s and 1990s large investments were made in
education. Secondary schools (since 1992 also outside Mal谷),
teacher colleges and vocational schools with specialization
in, among other things. tourism, medicine, administration
and technology have been opened. During the 1980s, ambitious
adult literacy campaigns were conducted. Literacy has grown
rapidly from 63% in 1980 to 93% (1995), which is the highest
in the region.
