Training
Education at both primary and secondary school levels is
free of charge. Eleven years of schooling between 5 and 16
years are compulsory. The primary school covers six years
between the ages of five and eleven. Secondary school starts
at 11 years and comprises two cycles of five and two years
respectively. In 2009, 94% of both boys and girls in the
relevant age groups were enrolled in primary school. For the
secondary school, the corresponding figure for the same year

Mauritius has two universities in Port Louis. A large
number of university students study abroad.
Of the total government expenditure in 2009, 11% went to
the education sector. The education standard in the country
is considered high, and in 2009 the reading and writing
skills of the population over 15 years were estimated to
total 88% (91% for men and 85% for women).
