Training
Prior to 1953, there were only traditional Quran schools
(Kuttab). This year, the first school of the Western type
was established. Officially, schooling is compulsory between
the ages of 6 and 18. Schooling is free for those who have
citizenship, parents are even paid to send their children to
school. Nevertheless, not all students complete the
education.

After a two-year preschool from the age of 4, six-year
primary school (6-12 years) and a three-year continuing
school (12-15 years), which has three lines, one general,
one religious and one vocational preparation, follow. This
is followed by a three-year high school with the same lines.
The number of students increased explosively from the
beginning of the 1960s, and to the same extent illiteracy
has decreased. In 2005, the general reading and writing
skills among adults was 90%. Young people have a higher
degree of literacy and fewer women than men today are
illiterate. See TOPSCHOOLSINTHEUSA for TOEFL, ACT, SAT testing locations and high school codes in United Arab Emirates.
In 1977, a university was opened in al-Ayn, with four
faculties (humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and
legal). A few years later, the Faculty of Medicine and
Technology was added. More than half of the university
students are women, since the sons are more likely to study
abroad.
The education system has expanded significantly in recent
years. In 2012, there were twelve university/university
branches in Abu Dhabi, nineteen in Dubai, five in Sharja,
three in Ras al-Khamya and two in Ajman.
