South Carolina is located in the southeastern United States and borders Georgia to the south and North Carolina to the north. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the east of the state, while the Appalachian Mountains rise to the west. Its capital city is Columbia, located in its central region. South Carolina has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The state is known for its long coastline, which stretches over 200 miles along the Atlantic Ocean. These mountains have many rivers running through them that eventually feed into Lake Hartwell near Clemson University. In addition to these natural features, South Carolina also has two national forests: Francis Marion National Forest in Charleston County and Sumter National Forest in Edgefield County.
Major Cities

Clemson University is a public research university located in Clemson, South Carolina. The University of South Carolina is a public research university located in Columbia, South Carolina and was founded in 1801. Furman University is a private liberal arts university located in Greenville, South Carolina founded in 1826 as a Baptist institution.
