Tennessee is located in the Southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi to the south, and Arkansas and Missouri to the west. Tennessee is divided into three distinct regions: East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee. East Tennessee is characterized by its hilly terrain due to its location in the Appalachian Mountains. The highest peak in the state is Clingmans Dome at 6643 feet above sea level. Middle Tennessee lies between East and West Tennessee and is mostly rolling hills with some mountainous areas near its eastern border with East Tennessee. West Tennessee has a flat terrain due to it being part of what was once known as the Gulf Coastal Plain. The climate of Tennessee varies from region to region with humid subtropical temperatures in much of middle and western parts of the state while mountainous areas have more moderate temperatures due to their higher elevation. Summers are usually hot throughout most of the state with humid conditions while winters can range from mild along coastal regions to cold in higher elevations.
Major Cities

Nashville is the state capital and the largest city in Tennessee, known for its vibrant music scene, museums, and historical sites. Memphis is another major city in Tennessee, known for its blues music and Graceland mansion. Chattanooga is located along the Tennessee River and is home to Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls. Knoxville is located in the eastern part of the state and offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking in nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Finally, Clarksville is located northwest of Nashville along the Cumberland River and offers plenty of historical sites to explore.
Primary Schools
Tennessee is home to several major primary schools, including the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University. The University of Tennessee is a public research university located in Knoxville, and it is the flagship institution of the state’s university system. It offers more than 280 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as 80 master’s and 60 doctoral programs. Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, is a private research university with more than 10,000 undergraduate students. It offers highly ranked programs in law, medicine, business, engineering, education, computer science and more. Other notable primary schools in Tennessee include Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro and East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. These schools offer quality education to their students with emphasis on academic excellence as well as extracurricular activities such as sports teams and student organizations.
Secondary Schools
Tennessee is home to many major secondary schools, both public and private. Public schools in the state are managed by the Tennessee Department of Education, with the majority of them being part of a larger school district. Some of the most well known public schools in Tennessee include Oak Ridge High School, Memphis Central High School, and Nashville Metro Public Schools. Private schools in Tennessee include Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Father Ryan High School in Nashville, and St. George’s Independent School in Collierville. These private schools offer students a more personalized learning experience with smaller student-teacher ratios and higher academic standards than most public schools. Private school tuition can be expensive but there are often scholarships available to help offset costs.
Higher Education
The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is one of the top three colleges in Tennessee. It is a public research university located in Knoxville, Tennessee and has been around since 1794. With over 28,000 students enrolled, it is one of the largest universities in the state. UTK offers over 900 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across 11 different colleges and schools. UTK is also home to many research centers, including the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy and the Institute for Nuclear Security. The college also has a strong athletic program with teams competing in NCAA Division I sports.
Vanderbilt University is another top college in Tennessee with a rich history dating back to 1873. Located in Nashville, it is a private research university with just under 13,000 students enrolled across four undergraduate schools and six graduate schools. The college offers a wide range of degree programs ranging from business to engineering to education and more. Vanderbilt also has an excellent athletic program with teams competing in NCAA Division I sports as well as club sports such as rugby and lacrosse. In addition to athletics, Vanderbilt also boasts many student organizations that provide opportunities for socialization and leadership development outside of traditional academics.
The University of Memphis rounds out the top three colleges in Tennessee with its main campus located in Memphis, Tennessee since 1912. It is one of the largest universities in the state with nearly 22,000 students enrolled from all over the world studying at its eight different academic divisions which include arts & sciences, engineering & technology as well as business & public service among others . UM offers over 250 undergraduate majors and minors along with numerous master’s degree programs across its nine different graduate schools . UM’s athletic program , known as “Tigers Athletics” , competes at NCAA Division I level . The university also features several student-run organizations that provide opportunities for leadership development outside of academics .
