Shortness of breath in pregnancy

Shortness of breath during pregnancy is quite common and normal, not usually a cause for concern.

Shortness of breath in pregnancy

With the growth of the baby inside the mother’s womb, the lungs and diaphragm are compressed, reducing the capacity of expansion of the rib cage. Thus, because the pregnant woman can not “fill her breast” as she did before, she feels short of breath.

However, in less common situations, shortness of breath in pregnancy can be a sign of some health problem, especially when accompanied by other symptoms.

See below for the causes of shortness of breath during pregnancy, and what to do.

Causes of shortness of breath during pregnancy

Shortness of breath during pregnancy may be caused by:

  • baby growth;
  • fatigue and fatigue;
  • excess physical activity;
  • stress and anxiety;
  • asthma and bronchitis;
  • heart disease.

As the pregnancy progresses, the shortness of breath tends to improve. This is due to the fact that, at around 34 weeks, the baby will fit into the pelvis, “lowering” the belly and reducing the pressure on the lungs and the diagram.

The shortness of air, common to many pregnant women, has no detrimental effect on the baby’s health, as the baby receives oxygen from the mother’s blood through the umbilical cord. However, when accompanied by other symptoms, shortness of breath may be a sign of something else, and as such should consult your obstetrician.

What to do if you suffer from shortness of breath during pregnancy?

When the pregnant woman feels short of breath, there are several precautions to take to help breathe better. These include:

  • make no effort;
  • rest;
  • do not lie on your stomach facing upwards;
  • seek to calm stress and anxiety;
  • sit and concentrate to breathe in a slow, slow and calm.

If the pregnant woman feels short of breath along with other symptoms, such as chills, fever, palpitation, coughing, fast heart, nails and purplish lips, and others, regardless of the quarter in which she is, she should go to the doctor as soon as possible , to realize what is causing the problem.

There are several diseases that can cause shortness of breath in pregnancy, such as respiratory or cardiac problems, and should be treated immediately so as not to put the health of the mother and baby at risk.
