According to INDEXDOTCOM, Alaska is the largest state in the United States, covering an area of 663,268 square miles. It is bordered by Canada to the east and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The state is divided into five distinct regions: the Interior, Southcentral, Southeast, Southwest, and North Slope. The Interior region is home to mountains, tundra and boreal forests, while Southcentral features a mix of coastal and interior landscapes. Southeast Alaska is known for its temperate rainforest and fjords. Southwest Alaska has large expanses of tundra and wetlands. Finally, North Slope is a remote region of Arctic tundra and glaciers. According to SIMPLYYELLOWPAGES, Alaska is home to three universities: University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska Anchorage, and University of Alaska Southeast. All three offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a variety of disciplines. University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is the state’s flagship university, located in Fairbanks in the Interior region of the state. UAF offers more than 200 academic programs, including several unique to the region such as Arctic and Northern Studies, Rural Development, and Indigenous Studies. University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is located in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. UAA offers over 70 undergraduate majors, as well as master’s degrees and doctoral degrees in select fields. The university is known for its focus on research opportunities for students. University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is located in Juneau, the capital city of Alaska. UAS offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental studies. The university also has an extensive distance education program that allows students to take courses online or through video conferencing from anywhere with internet access.
