Austria is a country located in Central Europe and is bordered by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany. It is known for its majestic mountains, picturesque villages, and vibrant cities. The official name of Austria is Republic of Austria (Republik Österreich). It has been an independent nation since 1955 when it declared independence from the Soviet Union. The abbreviation for Austria is AUT which stands for Austrian United Territories. This abbreviation was adopted in 1955 when Austria became an independent nation. AUT is an acronym for both English and Latin words which are used to refer to Austria in different contexts. In English it stands for Austrian United Territories while in Latin it stands for Austriae Universa Territoria or “All Austrian Territories”. The English version was adopted as part of a new national identity which was developed after independence from the Soviet Union. Austria has its own flag which features three horizontal stripes of equal width – red on the top, white in the middle and red on the bottom – with a black eagle representing strength and courage at its center. Additionally, there are two national symbols: a golden cross representing faith and justice; and a double-headed eagle representing power over both east and west. Both symbols feature prominently on coins throughout Austria as well as on official documents such as passports and visas. See 800zipcodes for Austria Geography and Population. In Austria, there are several major newspapers that are widely read and respected. The most popular newspaper is Der Standard, which was founded in 1988 and is printed in German language. It is known for its comprehensive coverage of national and international news, as well as its political commentary. The daily also features investigative pieces, editorials, opinion columns and interviews with prominent figures in the country. Another popular newspaper is Wiener Zeitung (Vienna Newspaper), which was established in 1703 and is printed in German language. It focuses on local politics, economy, culture and sports. Then there’s Die Presse (The Press), an Austria-based daily printed in German language that focuses on social issues such as health care, education, justice system and human rights abuses. Finally, there’s Kurier (Courier), another Austria-based daily that features investigative reports on politics and business across the country. These four newspapers are the most widely read publications in Austria today, providing readers with vital information about their country’s current affairs.
