China is a country located in the eastern region of Asia. It is bordered by India to the west, Mongolia to the north, and Vietnam to the south. The country has an area of 9,596,960 square kilometers and a population of over 1.4 billion people. The official language of China is Mandarin Chinese with many dialects throughout the country. The capital city is Beijing and its largest city is Shanghai. The official currency is Renminbi (CNY). China has a rich culture with influences from both East Asia and Central Asia. Its traditional music includes genres such as opera, classical music, pop music, as well as traditional instruments such as guzhengs and dizis. China has a continental climate due to its size; temperatures range from hot in summer to colder in winter months. Its economy relies heavily on exports such as electronics and textiles being important exports for the country. Other industries include steel production from its vast reserves as well as manufacturing for products such as cars and computers. Tourism also plays an important role in China’s economy with national parks such as Zhangjiajie National Park being popular destinations for visitors from around the world. People’s Daily is a daily newspaper that was founded in 1948 and is owned by the Chinese publisher, People’s Daily Press. It covers topics such as politics, economics, sports, and culture. Global Times is an independent Chinese-language newspaper that was founded in 1993 and focuses on investigative journalism. It covers topics such as human rights violations, corruption, political unrest, and environmental issues. Both newspapers have an online presence with news articles available to read for free. Other major newspapers include China Daily which focuses on politics; China Economic Weekly which has a focus on economics; Beijing News which covers international news; Guangzhou Daily which focuses on youth issues; and Business Management Weekly which reports on business news.
