It is bordered by Nebraska to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. The state has an area of 82,278 square miles (213,100 km2), making it the 15th largest state by area. The western two-thirds of Kansas is covered primarily by prairie grasslands and crop fields. The eastern third of Kansas is covered by hills and forests. The highest point in Kansas is Mount Sunflower at 4,041 feet (1,231 m). The state’s lowest point is Verdigris River at 679 feet (207 m). The majority of Kansas’ population lives in its cities and towns along Interstate 70 which runs east-west through the state from Colorado to Missouri. Major cities in Kansas include Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Salina and Hutchinson. Kansas State University is another large public research university located in Manhattan offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Wichita State University is a public research university in Wichita with several colleges such as the college of engineering and applied sciences as well as the college of health professions. Pittsburg State University is a smaller public university located in Pittsburg with several colleges such as business and technology, education and technology, science and mathematics.
