The Maldives is an archipelago nation situated in the Indian Ocean and consisting of more than 1,200 small coral islands and atolls. It has a population of over 400,000 people with a majority belonging to the Sunni Muslim faith. The official language is Dhivehi but English is widely spoken. The economy of the Maldives relies heavily on tourism with over 1 million visitors each year. Fishing and other marine-related activities are also important sources of income for the country, along with agricultural products such as coconuts, bananas, and sweet potatoes. The government also receives substantial revenue from foreign aid as well as taxes and customs duties. The Maldivian culture is strongly influenced by its Islamic faith with traditional values still practiced among certain communities alongside modern trends. Education is highly valued in the country with free primary education being provided by the government; however access to secondary education remains limited due to lack of resources in rural areas. Overall, the Maldives has experienced significant economic growth in recent years due to its booming tourism industry; however its small size and vulnerability to natural disasters means that it must remain vigilant in order to maintain this progress.
