According to INDEXDOTCOM, West Virginia is a state located in the Appalachian region of the Eastern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, and Pennsylvania and Maryland to the northeast. The state has a total area of 24,229 square miles and is divided into two distinct regions: The Allegheny Plateau in the west and the Appalachian Mountains in the east. The highest point in West Virginia is Spruce Knob at 4,863 feet above sea level. The majority of West Virginia’s terrain is rugged and mountainous with large areas of forestland, making it one of America’s most rural states. The state’s main rivers include the Ohio River, Potomac River, Monongahela River, Kanawha River, Greenbrier River and New River. According to SIMPLYYELLOWPAGES, West Virginia is home to a diverse range of universities, from large public research universities to small private liberal arts colleges. Public institutions like West Virginia University and Marshall University offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, while smaller private schools such as Bethany College, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Davis & Elkins College provide more intimate learning environments. All of these universities offer robust student life experiences and plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in the community. Additionally, many West Virginia universities offer unique academic programs such as the state’s flagship Land Grant program at WVU or the Appalachian Studies program at Shepherd University.
